Executive Summary with Rationale and Impact:

Detailed description of the item and why we are doing it. This can be a separate attachment.

DPR partnered with Urban Drainage Flood Control District (UDFCD) to improve Westerly Creek from East 13th to East 11th Avenue. The goal of the project is to restore wetlands, riparian areas, and native uplands, and to improve water quality by allowing pollutants to infiltrate the proposed wetland and riparian benches before discharging into the creek. In its existing condition, Westerly Creek in the project area is a highly engineered trapezoidal channel with buried riprap channel banks. UDFCD and DPR are planning for stream restoration activities along approximately 1,125 linear feet of Westerly Creek and its associated floodplain to improve the quality of the aquatic, wetland, and riparian habitat within Westerly Creek. The stream restoration activities include reshaping and realigning the channel to increase sinuosity and reestablish a higher functioning stream and floodplain system. The design would improve the ecological functions and quality of the aquatic, wetland, and riparian habitat within the reach and its associated floodplain through planting native wetland, shrub, and tree species. Additionally, the project will include relocating an existing pedestrian trail to accommodate the new stream design, and constructing a pedestrian stream crossing over the new channel to improve overall public safety and trail connections within Denver Park’s parks and greenway system.
