Executive Summary with Rationale and Impact:
Detailed description of the item and why we are doing it. This can be a separate attachment.
Request for an Ordinance to rename Martin Luther King Blvd to East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. That part of Martin Luther King Boulevard from North Downing Street to North Syracuse Street.
Per Ordinance No. 48, Series of 1980, E. 32nd Ave. was renamed to Martin Luther King Blvd. Our understanding is the “Jr.” was accidentally omitted from the ordinance, therefore the street name became Martin Luther King Blvd and not Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Newer subdivisions east of Syracuse St. include “Jr.” in the street name. The extent of Martin Luther King Blvd. without “Jr” goes from Downing St to Syracuse St. The street signs between Downing and Syracuse St. include “Jr.” The United States Postal Service sends mail to addresses within the 80205 Zip Code without “Jr.” in the street name. They are aware of the proposed address change for the affected addresses and will get their database prepared. It is extremely important to get this error corrected by a new ordinance citing the scrivener’s error. Once the ordinance passes, we will update the GIS database to have just E. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., as it was intended to be.
