Detailed description of the item and why we are doing it. This can be a separate attachment.

Rename the Denver Office for Strategic Partnerships Commission as the Denver Nonprofit Engagement Commission.

To align with the Office of Nonprofit Engagement’s refined mission to engage the nonprofit sector for the purpose of improving its capacity, sustainability, and overall ability to serve Denver residents in partnership with the City and County of Denver, and be a “best practices” city for how nonprofits are engaged, funded, and utilized, the commission is requesting the approval to change the name from the Denver Office for Strategic Partnerships Commission to the Denver Nonprofit Engagement Commission, to clearly reflect the work of the commission. The Commission serves as a catalyst for leveraging the best of Denver’s public and nonprofit sector and their commitment to engaging in innovative and collaborative efforts. The Commission’s core work is focused on providing support for the Office of Nonprofit Engagement and the implementation of its strategies and goals.

Why the Change

The commission is currently called the “Denver Office for Strategic Partnerships Commission.” The goal of the Commission is to advocate and engage with nonprofits, and the current name does not reflect that scope of work. In addition, too many inside the city and the broader community do not have the necessary understanding of what the Commission does. As a result, it makes it much easier to discount the Commission and not include it in critical conversations related to the overall body of work around nonprofits-making it even more difficult to improve the necessary processes related to how the Commission supports the sector. The focus of the Commission will not change and will continue its original undertaking-which is the engagement of nonprofits. Removing the word “office” from the commission name will better align itself with other commission titles and alleviate possible confusion when referencing both the office and Commission at the same time.
