A resolution approving a proposed Second Amendatory Agreement between the City and County of Denver and Denver Urban Gardens to continue food justice coursework and internships, add new at-home gardening programming, virtual programming, and cooking classes.
Amends a grant agreement with Denver Urban Gardens by adding $445,453 for a new total of $1,235,225 and one year for a new end date of 7-31-2023, through funding from the Healthy Food for Denver’s Kids Initiative, to continue food justice coursework and internships, add new at-home gardening programming, virtual programming, and cooking classes at multiple locations, citywide (ENVHL- 202055206-00/ ENVHL-202264022). The last regularly scheduled Council meeting within the 30-day review period is on 11-7-2022. The Committee approved filing this item at its meeting on 9-21-2022.

Type and Scope of services to be performed:
Denver Urban Gardens (DUG) was established in 1985 to support Denver residents in creating sustainable, food-producing neighborhood community gardens. Over the past 35+ years, DUG’s network of community gardens has expanded to six metro Denver counties as they have championed the power of plants, the people who grow them, and the communities they nourish. Denver Urban Gardens will take multiple approaches to reaching K-12 audiences with garden and food education. The primary goal: To expand DUG’s reach to both secondary and early childhood audiences (approximately 450 3rd-5th graders). For high school, this means expanding plans for food justice coursework and internships (approximately 140 HS students). For ECE, DUG will add new programming that offers children and their family’s opportunities to garden at home and at school (approximately 300 pre-k to 2nd graders). For elementary audiences, DUG will continue to provide virtual programming options as well as cooking classes. All of these programs are in an effort to provide more than 1,000 children with food and education about gardening and healthy eating.
