Vendor/Contractor Name (including any “DBA”): Social Space, LLC (Matthew Mazzotta, owner and lead artist)

Type and Scope of services to be performed:

Post-pandemic challenges including inflation, supply chain issues and cost of materials and labor increases have made it critically necessary to add funds to complete the project. The project has already been scaled down in scope, however, funds are still needed to realize the project.

*Additional information provided in attached executive summary

Artist Matthew Mazzotta, owner of Social Space, LLC, of Canton, NY, will create an original artwork for the National Western Center Riverfront. The artwork will consist of a roughly 60’ x 30’ open-air “barnlike” structure. The artwork will include slow-moving swings, lighting and a local artist’s mural on the roof.  The project will lead viewers along the Riverfront and create an artistic destination for the National Western Center audience and the communities across the South Platte River. The project is meant to be a flexible gathering space for everyone and several programmatic plans are under way. Matthew Mazzotta will work with Public Art, National Western Center, Parks and Rec and City Public Works staff in creating the preliminary design and all the final designs will be stamped by a CO licensed engineer.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Background:

In 2020 the Public Art Program began the process to commission a public artwork with funds generated by the development of the National Western Center. This is one of three projects for the NWC campus. A 15-member art selection panel that included community members, an artist and art professional, and Councilwoman Candi CdeBaca selected artist Matthew Mazzotta, (doing business as Social Space LLC) for a commission amount of $400,000.

Current Request:

Denver Arts & Venues is seeking City Council approval to amend the contract to add an additional $450,000 for a total contract amount of $850,000. Post-pandemic challenges including inflation, supply chain issues, cost of materials and labor, and the complexity of the site have made it critically necessary to add funds to complete the project.

Artist Matthew Mazzotta will create a structure for community gatherings and events that references a barn and the act of a "barn-raising," titled Rising Together. The structure will provide shade, seating, swings, and a colorful focal point along the riverfront open space. Mazzotta will work with local artist, Bimmer Torres, to paint a mural on the exterior and interior of the roof of the structure. Local fabricators have been identified

Mazzotta is responsible for designing, engineering, fabrication, transportation, installing artwork, and all other miscellaneous components necessary to complete the commission, including lighting for the art. Stamped engineering drawings by a licensed Colorado engineer are a requirement before fabrication. All fabrication and installation will be performed by local contractors.
