Subject:                     Proposed Public Art Donations for Johnson-Habitat Park, District 7, and

Confluence Park, District 9.

=================================================================================================

Background:

The Colorado Parks Foundation awarded grants to artist Mary Williams and the artist team of Andrew Patch and Edward Done for site-specific public artworks to be sited at Confluence Park, 2250 15th St., and Johnson-Habitat Park, 610 Jason St, respectively. The grants supply funding for public artworks that are otherwise not possible without new 1% funds. Denver Parks & Recreation and Denver Arts & Venues have approved the artworks' safety, engineering, and locations.

Current Request:

Denver Arts & Venues is requesting City Council approval of a bill to accept the donated artworks "A River Runs Through It" by Mary Williams, and "Your World for a Moment" by the artist team of Andrew Patch and Edward Done.

Project Goals:

Mary Williams' "A River Runs Through It" will provide an engaging environmental art experience for the citizens of Denver by creating a permanent 3D mural at Confluence Park. The mural will draw attention to the importance of the South Platte River to the history of this significant geographic location. It will also add a splash of color and life to the existing retaining wall, thus creating an inspiring focal point for Confluence Park East.

Andrew Patch and Edward Done will fabricate a series of kinetic sculptures inspired by the Columbine, the Colorado state flower, titled "Your World for a Moment." The artwork will be used as an educational component of the South Platte River Environmental Education (SPREE) program headquartered at Johnson-Habitat Park.
